A Little Piece of Heaven on Ascension Island
Thursday 15th March 2007
Where is Ascension Island and what's it like?
It's only 35 miles square – a volcanic rock, just a pinprick in the South Atlantic half way between Africa and South America. There are amazing white-sand beaches and the sea's full of tropical fish. There's incredible wildlife – turtles, sharks, whales, dolphins, also wild donkeys and sheep which sometimes stray into the house! It's warm all year round, but hottest in February, when it gets to 35° C plus. We're very close to the equator.
What made you move?
We were finding it harder to achieve a good work/life balance and wanted to give our children a different life. I saw an ad in my accountancy magazine for a job here. We found it in the atlas and then researched it on the net. We had a family meeting and the kids said: 'Go for it.' We moved in September 2005.
