MENORCA – THE QUIET ISLAND
Friday 1st December 2006
Soft sandy beaches, empty bays and welcoming people are just three of the reasons people return to this Balearic island again and again.
Menorca, the 'minor' island, is much smaller and quieter than big sister Majorca. If you like soaking up the rays in peace, this is the island for you.
There are around 120 beaches, ranging from the glorious golden 2km stretch of sand in Son Bou to tiny lovers' coves. The peace is blissful, and apart from the sunbed operators, no one tries to sell you anything, there's no loud music, and the bins aren't overflowing with rubbish.
The resort of Punta Prima, on the south-east coast, is just 20 minutes' drive from the airport. Like most parts of Menorca, it's not for those looking for nightlife, but it does have a small sandy bay with turquoise water. There are several beach bars and restaurants, including the Lighthouse Bar, which has traditional Spanish dancing in the open air.
To see the whitewashed villages and gentle countryside inland, you'll need a car; it only takes about an hour to drive the length of the island.
