The presenter of the BBC's Holiday says Venice is the destination for his favourite romantic holiday. It's also where his favourite hotel is.

'It's the Hotel Danieli. It costs an arm and a leg, but two nights there and you're a real person again. Venice is all about sleep, sex and shopping.

'Have large lunches, do lots of shopping, then flop back to the room for all sorts of grown-up behaviour.'

Back in England there's a particular part of Cornwall that Laurence can't resist.

'It's Boscastle on the north Cornish coast,' he reveals. 'It's one of my joys. It's back on form now after the terrible flood in 2004. The witchcraft museum is brilliant.'

'My favourite beach is Daymer Bay, opposite Padstowe, in north Cornwall; it's practically infinite at low tide. It's absolutely magical on a February morning with the dogs and nobody else around.

And what's his favourite family holiday?

'That's Tanque Verde Ranch, in Arizona,' says Laurence, enthusiastically. 'We went there to see if we could survive as cowboys. We had a brilliant time riding and swimming, despite getting up at 5.30am because it was so hot – 117ºC!'
